—° Loading conditions

Phuket runs a dry season from November to April and a green, wetter monsoon from May to October. It is warm all year - rain arrives in short heavy bursts rather than grey days.

Why people choose Natai Beach

Natai is the first beach north of Phuket, on the mainland side of the Sarasin Bridge, and it is roughly what Phuket’s west coast looked like thirty years ago. Ten kilometres of straight Andaman sand, rubber and palm country behind it, and almost nothing built along it beyond a short list of resorts and private houses set back off the beach.

Buyers come for the one thing Phuket has effectively run out of: real beachfront, in size, at a price the island no longer offers. The trade is distance — everything social is back over the bridge.

Where it sits

Natai runs north from the mouth of the Phang Nga channel, in Khok Kloi, Takua Thung district — the first coast you reach after crossing the Sarasin Bridge off Phuket. The airport is around twenty-five minutes south, which is quicker than the drive from Bang Tao or Kamala.

Khok Kloi, the local town, is ten minutes inland for markets, banks and a hospital. Boat Avenue and Laguna are around forty minutes, Phuket Town closer to an hour, and Khao Lak forty-five minutes further north.

Natai Beach in detail

Natai was farmland and fishing coast until very recently, and a good deal of it still is. The 2004 tsunami struck this shore hard, and what was rebuilt afterwards went up slowly and low: a small number of high-end resorts and private houses rather than a strip.

The result is a beach that arrived at the luxury market without ever passing through the mass-tourism stage that shaped Phuket’s west coast.

Around ten kilometres of straight, open sand facing due west, with a gentle shelf and a long tide that leaves a wide flat beach at low water. It is a walking and sunset beach more than a swimming bay: from May to October the south-west monsoon puts real surf and rip current on it. Turtles still come ashore along this coast in the winter months.

Almost entirely inside the resorts, which open their kitchens to non-residents, plus simple Thai restaurants along the coast road and in Khok Kloi. There is no dining strip and there is unlikely to be one.

Khok Kloi, ten minutes inland, covers the day to day: fresh markets, banks, a large supermarket and a government hospital. Anything bigger is back over the bridge — Porto de Phuket and the Thalang superstores are around forty minutes.

There are no international schools in Phang Nga. UWC Thailand in Thalang is the nearest at about thirty-five minutes and the rest are further into Phuket. Takua Thung hospital handles routine care; Bangkok Hospital Phuket is around forty-five minutes. A car is essential — there is no useful public transport.

Did you know?

It is not actually Phuket

Natai is in Phang Nga — a different province, with its own land prices and its own planning rules.

Closer to the airport than Kamala

Twenty-five minutes to the terminal, against forty or more from most of Phuket’s west coast.

Ten kilometres, almost empty

You can walk the length of the beach and pass a few dozen people, most of them resort guests.

Natai Beach questions we actually get asked

No. It is in Phang Nga province, immediately north of the Sarasin Bridge that joins Phuket to the mainland. In practice it is lived in as a Phuket address — the airport, the schools and the marinas are all reached from here — but the land is Phang Nga land, and it is priced accordingly.

About twenty-five minutes outside peak hours, on a good road. That is quicker than Bang Tao, Kamala or Patong.

The law is the same as in Phuket: land cannot be held in a foreigner’s own name. Natai is villa country rather than condominium country, so purchases are usually structured as long leases or through a Thai company. The structure matters more here than the address — take proper advice before committing.

In the dry season, yes: the shelf is gentle and the water is calm. From May to October the monsoon puts surf and rip currents on the beach and it is often not safe. Almost every house here has a pool for that reason.

It lets well as a villa destination in high season, particularly at the top of the market where the draw is the whole house and an empty beach. It is a weaker short-let market than Bang Tao, because there is nothing to walk to; occupancy leans on the villa itself.

For a lot of buyers, yes, and it is worth being honest about it. There are no bars, no shops and nothing walkable. People who choose Natai want the beach and the space, and treat the drive into Phuket as the price of both.
