Thalang

Thalang was Phuket’s capital, and the island’s defining story happened here: the 1785 defence against a Burmese siege led by two local women, commemorated by the Heroines’ Monument that still marks the district’s main junction.

Tin shaped everything afterwards. The mines behind the west coast were worked until the industry collapsed, and the land they left was rehabilitated from the 1980s into the Laguna estate — the project that turned the north-west into what it is today.

Two of them, and they behave differently. The west faces the Andaman with open surf beaches, monsoon swell and sunsets; the east faces Phang Nga Bay with mangrove, flat water year-round and the marinas. Buyers who want to swim look west; buyers who want a boat increasingly look east.

Boat Avenue is the district’s dining centre with the widest international range on the island outside Phuket Town, backed by beach clubs along Bang Tao and excellent, cheap local kitchens throughout the inland villages and the eastern shore.

Porto de Phuket and the Cherngtalay strip serve the west; Si Sunthon and Thalang town carry the practical trade — supermarkets, hardware, vehicles and services — for the whole north of the island.

UWC Thailand sits centrally in the district and is a major reason families choose the north. Clinics are spread through Cherngtalay and Thalang; the major private hospitals are in Phuket Town, twenty-five to forty-five minutes depending on where you start. A car is assumed everywhere except Boat Avenue.
